Water Retention and Cancer
Question
I have recently had lung cancer surgery where they took out the tumor. I have just finished 20 radiotherapy sessions and I now have a very swollen stomach, it won’t go down. I am concerned. I have to waite 6 weeks for a scan on operation site.
Answer
A lot of people say ‘stomach’ (which is just under your breastbone) when they mean abdomen – much lower down. I’m presuming this is what you are referring to.
Without knowing more about you it’s hard to say what’s going on, but if you’ve already asked your doctor and have not been given an answer, there are various possible causes.
If your tummy is very swollen with water retention and you can actually feel water swishing about inside, this is known as ascites. It happens when blood vessels leak fluid into the spaces between the abdominal organs. They do this when there is high blood pressure in the tummy, or if the vessels are damaged, or the lymphatic nodes in the area have been damaged and are unable to drain off water retention.
The solution is to keep in touch with your medical team and if they say no treatment is necessary for the swelling, then just give your body time to recover. Give it lots of TLC and eat good quality, healthy foods.
While the Waterfall Diet as advertised on this site would probably not make this kind of water retention go away, you may be interested in the information in the paperback version of the book, about foods such as blueberries that help to keep blood vessels strong and healthy.
