Water Retention: Diet To Banish Water Weight, Swollen Legs, Bloating

Premenstrual water retention

If you suffer from water retention before your monthly periods, this is almost certainly due to a magnesium and B vitamin deficiency. Magnesium is a mineral found in whole-grains such as whole-wheat or pumpernickel, oats and brown rice, as well as dark green leafy vegetables. If you don’t eat these foods every day you are very likely to have a deficiency of these nutrients.

B vitamins are mostly found in the same foods, especially vitamin B6, which helps your body to use magnesium.

If you consume sugary foods and drinks like ice cream, chocolate or sodas, or sweetened tea or coffee several times a day, and if you normally eat sandwiches, buns or toast made from white bread, or eat deep-fried foods every day, you are almost certainly not getting enough magnesium and B vitamins. This disrupts the hormones that look after your water balance, and makes you retain water around the time of your period. This water retention can make you swollen, bloated and uncomfortable, and eating salty foods can aggravate it too.

You can read more about the causes of water retention in my book titled The Waterfall Diet. Search for it online or use the Amazon links in the right-hand panel to find out more about the book.
