Question

I’ve been on the pill for about 3 or 4 years now. I had to go on it because I was having my period’s too close together and was losing too much iron/blood. I was extremely skinny (underweight for my age/height) since then i’ve put on at least 10 kgs even though my diet is the same. My ankles have obvious water retention to the point where its affecting my self esteem and restricts the kind of footwear I can wear (The tenderness and tightness). I Told my doctor and she said I just needed to drink more water So i did. Nothing has changed in the few months.

I can’t really go off the pill so i’m asking if there is another way to lose the fluid in my ankles? Will using a prescribed fluid tablet work?

Answer

The contraceptive pill consists of artificial steroid hormones, and is notorious for causing water retention. Your periods should not be abnormally close together unless you are doing something wrong in your diet and lifestyle.

The last thing you should take is fluid tablets. They are the worst thing you can do for a problem like this as they will teach your body to hold on to water. Many people regret starting to take them.

Once you can correct the hormonal imbalance which is causing the problem with your periods, you should be able to come off the birth control pill. You can get more information about hormones and water retention by reading the Waterfall Diet book (see panel opposite) or consult a naturopathic or holistic nutrition practitioner.

Here is the story of how she lost almost 20 pounds of water retention in just two months.

“I began the Waterfall Diet program in earnest beginning of August, 2009. It is towards the end of September now and I have literally peed out almost 20 pounds worth of water retention. I lost 10 pounds in the first 3 weeks. I hope to drop another 5-10 pounds. I am fairly sure all my excess weight was water retention as I have always been a decent eater. Now I am a healthy eater. I eat plenty of foods and don’t get hungry.”

“I also joined a gym and a trainer helps with exercise. It has been 15 years since I have been in the gym. I love it but I know it is the Waterfall Diet that is making the difference.”

“When a gym trainer weighed me in before I started the Waterfall Diet, I was just short of 173 pounds. Today I weighed myself at 154. I have lost almost 4 inches of water retention from my belly. I couldn’t be happier. So many pieces of information in your book have fit for me. I feel for so many who try to lose weight and struggle and work out so darn hard. This way was easy and only took 2 months. Thank you so much Linda.”

16 lbs of Water Retention
Testimonial from Alison in Ozark, Missouri

“Happy to report have now lost 16 lbs!…in 25 days! I only started the diet on 30th August. I’m again referencing your original book about the Waterfall diet with recipes and such, and this time around, have become more adventurous with food preparation. Have downloaded your low carb and additional recipe suggestions.”

23 lbs of Water Retention
Testimonial from Lucy in New Jersey

“Well, I bought the book on the Waterfall Diet and so far I have lost 23 pounds because I started out at 188 and now I am 165. I am still losing slowly but before it was impossible for me to lose weight.”

“I am very happy that I found this diet. It is not really starving yourself but eating foods that are right for you. Yesterday I was at the doctor’s office for a blood test which I have to take every three months. I found out that my blood pressure was 112/72, the nurse told me that reading is excellent, my normal reading use to be 120/80. I am so happy now I know the causes of water retention for me and why I was unable to lose weight.”

More Comments

“Thanks to your book I now understand what my problem is – water retention! After 60 tests I still couldnt get to the bottom of why my legs felt separate from the rest of my body (my upper half is quite sinewy!).”

“Dear Linda I have recently downloaded your 2 books, the Waterfall Diet and Treat Yourself with Nutritional Therapy. I’m very excited to have found the first one as I have had water retention most of my life and there hasn’t been one doctor who has pinpointed it like you did. I started the diet this past Monday and already feel better. Thank you very much for this positive information.”

“I’ve signed up for your newsletter. Looking 4ward to more info to learn from. Linda’s writing is so inspirational and practical!”

“Loved the book!”

“Your Nutritional Health Bible is one of my bibles”.

“I have had this weight problem for the last 3 years. The facts mentioned in your book about water retention exactly fits my problems. Hence I was confident that my weight issues was due to water retention. In one year I had put on 15 kgs. I tried all sorts of exercise diet programmes but nothing changed my weight. In the first one week after I started the waterfall diet I lost about 5 kgs. ”

“I love you Linda. My feet were swollen for 10 years before I read your book. Thank you so much. God bless you.”

“I never thought foods can make a difference to powerful and stubborn hormones, but this book has changed my perception on food nutrition for ever. Your diet does help to lose water retention weight and I would recommend your book like no other!!!! I put on water retention after my miscarriage and until now could not lose it. MILLION THANK YOUs Linda and wishing you all the best. Hope xxx”

“Linda, I just want to thank you for helping me to lose weight. I have religiously been working out since last October with barely any results in weight loss. I began at 170lbs. After drinking Acai Berry juice, I loss 7 but once again I plateaud. Leaving the 160s had been the hardest thing I ever did. When my doctor told me the amount of water I could be retaining could be caused by HRT, I googled how I could get rid of it. The Waterfall Diet came up. I ordered the book I think two weeks later and the pounds have shed like crazy. I feel healthier and don’t have to take my blood pressure pills everyday. My 30th High School Reunion is this weekend and I’m looking fabulous at 141 pounds. Thanks so much! PS I have sent a letter to Oprah requesting that she put you on her show.”

“Hello Linda, Thanks to your Waterfall diet, I have got rid of my water retention. Along the way during this diet, I have lost all my aches and pains from my rheumatoid arthritis, AND lost 8.5 kg in the 5 weeks that I have been on the diet. I must add that these joint pains I have had for 4-5 years!”

Many people develop water retention after a long-distance flight. This is due to a combination of inactivity and cabin pressure. Sometimes the water retention remains for a long time after the flight.

It is easier to prevent than to treat this condition. Remember to keep wiggling your toes and rotating your ankles during the flight. Invent little exercises for your legs, like bumping your knees together quickly 100 times with your feet resting on your toes. Get up and walk to the toilet as often as you can, just for the exercise.

If you develop water retention after a long-distance flight, don’t be tempted to self-medicate with water pills (diuretics). This will perpetuate the condition by teaching your body to hold on to water.

A combination of the Waterfall Diet and massage treatments is the best way to help your body recover.

Question

I flew to France in April – it was a 9-hour flight. When I got home, my ankles were severely swollen – water retention. 6 weeks later – still swollen. The Dr. gave me a water pill to take daily. It has helped somewhat, but not entirely.

Answer

A combination of cabin pressure and many hours of inactivity can cause water retention during long-haul flights. Water pills are not the answer – see our articles on the dangers of these pills, which should only be used for very specific types of water retention.

To prevent this problem, get up and walk about as often as you can during the flight, even if this means pretending to go to the toilet. Keep wiggling your toes and ankles to maintain the lymphatic circulation in your legs. Make sure you always eat plenty of flavonoid-rich foods like dark red and purple berries, otherwise water can leak into your tissues more easily.

Don’t just eat the right foods before the flight, you need to incorporate them permanently into your diet in order to avoid weakening the walls of your small vessels.

Question

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in Jan 2011 and since then I have been suffering badly from water retention. It’s so bad that overnight I gain 2 kg. Two years back I was 80 kg and by going to the gym I lost 18 kg and was 62 kg before starting on my thyroid pills. But in the last one month I have again gained 4 kg and am unable to lose this weight this time. Due to water retention I am getting severe joint pain in legs and now slowly it’s appearing in my hands also. It’s troubling me a lot. Please suggest some way out.

Answer

The condition of our glands is often an indicator that we are not treating our body right. An underactive thyroid is an end point of a process that has been going on for a long time. I would love to be able to say ‘just do this and your problem will vanish in a week’ but since even your doctor can’t cure you, I’m sure you understand that there is no magic answer. There are plenty of things you can do to help yourself, based on scientific research into diet and nutrition, but it took me a year to write the book summarizing it all, so the answer won’t really fit into a blog post…

If you can get hold of my book The Waterfall Diet, it provides a pretty good starting point for the natural treatment of most kinds of water retention, even when linked to an underactive thyroid. You will learn about the different foods and nutrients that your body needs in order to maintain a healthy water balance, and it also explains how to test yourself for ‘unsafe’ foods. These are foods that increase inflammation in your body and can both affect your thyroid and make you retain water.

Wishing you success and do leave a comment letting us know how you get on.

The Waterfall Diet is the name of a unique book about water retention, why people have it and how they can get rid of it. (Water pills are rarely the best solution.)

By avoiding the wrong foods and eating the right foods, it is possible for many people to get rid of 10 pounds or more of water retention which they may have had for many years.

In order to know what foods are safe for you to eat, you have to carry out some tests on yourself. So the actual waterfall diet itself consists of carefully carried out procedures, followed by a longer term diet based on what they reveal.

The author, nutritionist Linda Lazarides, spent many years developing these procedures and writing her book. So we’re sorry to disappoint you but the waterfall diet is a valuable paperback book from a major international publisher and is not a free download. Anyone on the internet trying to offer a ‘waterfall diet free download’ is as phony as a three-dollar bill and is not providing the real thing.

Here’s where you can get your copy of the book

We get many enquiries from people on a gluten- and/or dairy-free diet about whether the Waterfall Diet is compatible.

We can confirm there is no problem with using the Waterfall Diet if you are on a gluten or dairy free diet or both. The foods which are especially helpful to combat water retention do not need to include gluten or dairy products.

In fact the Waterfall Diet book will explain how to test yourself in case you also have a problem with any other foods in addition to gluten or cows milk products.

The Waterfall Diet book explains that there are two types of response to
the diet. Not everyone will release water within a couple of weeks, although a lot of people do. These people are sensitive to certain foods and by cutting out the problem foods, histamine is reduced, allowing water to come out of storage from the tissues.

Phases I and II of the Waterfall Diet test you to find out if you have any food sensitivities. If the test comes up negative, you are very lucky, although you might not think so, because you still have your water retention. You are lucky because once you get to Phase III of the diet, you won’t have to continue avoiding every tiny morsel of some of the most common, everyday foods.

As you know, water retention can also be caused by hormonal imbalances and damage to the metabolism. As explained in the book, this takes longer to fix, so after completing Phases I and II, you may need to stay on Phase III for 6-12 months. During this time you should begin to see small signs that your hormones or metabolism are beginning to recover. You may feel more energetic, lose your PMS, skin condition, headaches or joint pains.

It may seem hard to stay motivated, but please try. The Waterfall Diet is not a fad weight loss diet but a medical diet for the treatment of water retention. If your metabolism is in severe distress, it cannot repair itself in a couple of weeks after decades of not giving it what it needs.

If you love your body enough to give it what it needs you will reap the benefits. Just try to hang in there through phases I and II. Phase III is much easier. Let us know how you get on.

Question: Can’t Lose Weight

I am 38 years old, I have been living in Middle East for the last 5 years and after I had my second son here 4.5 years ago I noticed that my body cant go back to my normal weight of 60kg. I cant loose 5-6kg despite exercising, mainly yoga and sensible diet, my shoe size went up by 2 numbers since I moved here. I eat balance diet and drink lots of water and fresh juices. I have healthy heart, kidneys, liver and have no history of thyroid. Is this water retention?

Answer

It may be water retention or possibly hormonal. The best way to find out is to follow the Waterfall Diet for two weeks. If the weight goes quickly, then it was water retention.

Question: Arthritis and Ulcerative Colitis

I have arthritis and is protein deficient with a dx of ulcerative colitis. I am retaining fluid and do not know why. I have been taking lasix to try to rid the edema but it does not seem to work. I swell in my hip, stomach and thighs and buttock. Do you think your diet will help?

Answer

The Waterfall Diet is designed exactly for problems like this. Diuretics (water pills) are likely to make this type of water retention worse in the long term.

Question: What If You Only Have One Kidney?

My wife Debbie had a kidney removed soon after she was born 48 years ago. She is desperate to lose weight and is currently dieting and keeping fit with running, swimming etc to no avail. I’ve studied your website and suggested to her water retention may be the issue? Will your book be appropriate on the basis that she only has one kidney?

Answer

The paperback version of the Waterfall Diet book contains an especially useful chapter on kidney health. People with one kidney need to know how to look after their kidney, and there are many important facts in this chapter. Please see the links in the right-hand column for how to get the book from Amazon. Or you can order it from a bookstore by quoting ISBN 0749942533.

Question: Waterfall Diet And Diabetes

My dad is 75, diabetic with High BP and is trying to avoid sodium and sugar, carbs, too. Having a horrible time with edema to the point where it is difficult to breathe ( stomach is swollen). Is taking lots of meds and furosemide which doesn’t seem to be working. Is this diet safe for him?

Answer

The Waterfall Diet is a book which will help you understand many facts about water retention. The book also contains a diet which is healthy, especially for diabetics .

Question: Can Insecticide Cause Water Retention?

I thought I was not drinking enough water so I increased my intake. To my surprise I have started getting dizzy. I have gained about 12 pounds in 10 months. I changed residence about that same time. The guy next door has lots of dogs so flies are always in my house. I spray insecticide ALL the time. Could that cause water retention?

Answer

You should find some other way to keep flies out of your home. Insecticide is a poison and that fact that you have water retention may indeed be an early sign that you are being poisoned.

Water retention and cancer

My wife was recently diagnosed with Cancer and has had several Chemo therapy treatments as well as radiation. She is taking several meds including 1 for High blood pressure. We recently had to go to the Emergency room for a rapid heart rate [140] we discovered she was dehydrated. So now she is drinking alot of water and it seems like she has gained like 15lbs in the last week or so..it really looks liek the gain is in her face and upper body. I would like to know your thoughts and should I have reason for concern. She is 52 y/old and was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in April 2011…Thank you

Answer

Many people suffer kidney damage from chemotherapy, which can be very damaging to the kidneys. Water retention in these cases can be a sign of kidney damage.

Diuretic foods sound like a good idea if you’re trying to lose water retention or water weight. After all, no-one wants to take pills if they can help it.

But before you decide that diuretic foods are the best way to lose water retention, please be aware that they are not a cure. At best diuretics of any kind offer temporary relief. At worst they can be addictive and in the long term can end up making your water retention much worse.

You are probably cautious about them, which is why you are searching for information on diuretic foods rather than water pills (also known as diuretic drugs). But the fact is that anything which acts as a diuretic has the same effect on your body. It interferes with the natural hormones that keep your kidneys working in a healthy, balanced way.

The most powerful diuretic foods are actually drinks: tea, coffee and alcohol. All these items force your kidneys to go on excreting water even if you are becoming dehydrated. This is one of the most harmful things for your body. Dehydration in its early stages is not always noticeable. It may make you thirsty, but if you then consume more diuretic foods (drinks) you will simply stay dehydrated.

Diuretic Foods and Dehydration

If your body is constantly dehydrated, it can affect your ability to think straight, and in particular it affects your joints and your spine. Your bones need cartilage to stop them rubbing together. Cartilage is 90 per cent water. Dehydration makes cartilage shrink, and is likely to be one of the reasons why arthritis (swollen, painful joints) is such a common disease and also why backache is so common.

One of the worst effects of dehydration is to teach your body to hold on to water in your body’s tissues – preventing it from getting to the blood where your kidneys will grab and excrete it. Your tissues are where water retention collects and produces swellings, e.g. in your face, hands, feet, legs, ankles or tummy. Your body holds on to water here, to prevent these parts of your body from getting dehydrated. The more diuretic foods you consume, the worse this problem will get over time.

Diuretic Foods: The Solution To Water Retention?

Eating the right kinds of foods is often an effective solution for water retention. But these are not diuretic foods. They do not make your kidneys work harder. Some foods like dark blue and purple berries are great because they help to start healing some of the causes of water retention. But it is the overall balance of your diet, and sometimes the foods you don’t eat, which really makes a difference to a water retention problem.

Please do explore some of the other articles on this site, which tell you more about water retention causes, and about a book called the Waterfall Diet, which contains a self-test and plenty of other helpful information.

Water retention is often a sign that you need to pay some attention to what you are eating. It could turn out to be a blessing, because if you change your diet now, rather than just try to rely on diuretic foods, you may be able to prevent worse health problems from arising in the future.
